If you ask an Off the Shelf writer “What’s your favorite book?” don’t expect to get a short answer. We have, and will continue to, evangelize about all the books we’re currently in love with until you beg us to stop. But, if you’re into that kinda stuff, we’ll always be here for you. Here are 10 authors we’re currently crazy about, characters whose honor we will defend until death, and the well-worn books we will forever keep on our shelves—because…you just never know when you will need it, okay?

When you tell someone that you work in book publishing, their response is often: “Wow, it must be so great to be able to read books all day.” But the reality is quite the opposite—much to our chagrin, most of us don’t actually get to read books at our desks. As a result, we spend a lot of time wishing that we could still be reading the book that was so engrossing it almost made us miss our subway stop on the way to work. Here are the books we wish we were reading right now.

Since its debut, “S-Town” has been captivating listeners and sparking endless discussions. This comes as no surprise, considering “S-Town” has the same producers as “Serial” and “This American Life.” The premise of their new project began with an email from a rural Alabama clock maker, John B. McLemore, to journalist Brian Reed, asking him to investigate a murder, but it turned into so much more. “S-Town” is a modern Southern Gothic, a family drama, a look at small-town America, and most of all, a fascinating character study of a brilliant yet troubled man. If you binged on every episode of “S-Town” and now wish there were a way to recapture the same excitement, mystery, and intrigue, here’s the reading list for you.

Beach reading is something we look forward to all year long. We can’t wait to pack up a bag with a few great paperbacks, a giant bottle of sunscreen, and—if we’re feeling particularly festive—a cooler with a selection of fine adult cocktails. Now we’ve combined our years of literary expertise with our oh-so-refined beverage preferences to create a list of exactly what books and what beverages you should be enjoying this summer. But in all seriousness, don’t forget your sunscreen!

In 1969, the modern fight for LGBTQ rights in the United States was jumpstarted by the Stonewall Riots. One year later, the first Gay Pride March was held to commemorate the riots, becoming the genesis for June Pride events around the world. This year, we at Off the Shelf are celebrating Pride with 11 books featuring LGBTQ characters and by LGBTQ individuals that showcase how far we’ve come since the raids and riots of the ’60s and the struggles and experiences of the LGBTQ community today.
